ThermoCoat are the exclusive UK and Ireland distributors of Corticyte, a sustainable, thermal, waterproof, breathable, flexible, and durable cork-based spray render system that can be used to decorate and protect external walls, interior walls, encapsulate asbestos and waterproof failing roofs.
Corticyte is harvested in a sustainable manner using the bark from Cork Oak Trees. During the harvesting process, no trees are damaged and over a period of nine years, the bark regrows to its initial state. This helps to make Corticyte one of the most eco-friendly, low-carbon render and coating systems.
Now in its 6th generation of development, Corticyte is spray-applied by ThermoCoat approved applicators in 1.5mm layers to achieve an overall thickness of 3mm. Pre-tinted with any colour choice, the solution saves on painting costs and lasts for at least 20 years with minimal fade unlike traditional coatings.
CORTICYTE USE CASES
Corticyte is a flexible, spray-applied coating that can be used in many different environments. It’s primarily used as an external wall render system to provide a decorative and durable alternative to traditional wall renders. Thanks to its breathability and waterproofing credentials, it can also be used as a solution to encapsulate and strengthen failing roofs.
EXTERNAL WALL RENDER
Corticyte is primarily used as an external wall render system that replaces traditional cement-based wall renders. It is spray-applied as a 3-4mm layer onto external walls using specialist equipment and ThermoCoat-approved applicators.
CORTICYTE Benefits
Thermal
Corticyte coatings offer insulation qualities to reduce thermal bridging, providing better heat retention during winter whilst blocking solar gain in the summer.
Waterproof
A 3mm layer of Corticyte helps to stop water penetration when used on external walls and roofs. Driving rain, wind and snow are all blocked at source.
Breathable
Unlike some render systems, Corticyte is breathable and offers variable permeability to stop external rain whilst enabling interior moisture to escape.
Durable
Corticyte stands the test of time and comes pre-tinted to the required colour. With just 1% colour-fade per year, Corticyte will last for at least 20 years!
Flexible
Other render or coating systems are rigid and subject to cracking. Corticyte is flexible and pliable to ensure it withstands impact, movement, and abrasion.
Sustainable
Using a renewable harvesting method from cork oak trees, Corticyte is sustainable and eco-friendly whilst containing no carbon, VOCs or HFCs.
SUSTAINABILITY FEATURES
Corticyte is a flexible, spray-applied coating that can be used in many different environments. It’s primarily used as an external wall render system to provide a decorative and durable alternative to traditional wall renders. Thanks to its breathability and waterproofing credentials, it can also be used as a solution to encapsulate and strengthen failing roofs.
Corticyte Is Sustainable & Revolutionary!
Corticyte is sourced and manufactured sustainably from over 700,000 hectares of forest in Portugal. Harvested from the Cork Oak Tree, the bark is stripped from sections of the trunk without compromising on the lifespan of the tree. Over a further 8 years, the bark regrows until back to its original state. In the meantime, the stripped tree trunks absorb more carbon and release more oxygen, helping to balance the ecosystem. Corticyte is a revolutionary product that is rapidly replacing traditional cementitious render coatings.

CORTICYTE ECO & SUSTAINABLE CORK
01.
A natural and renewable product
Because of its unique properties: elasticity, lightweight, impermeability, insulation and resistance to vibration, cork has many uses.
However, it is the production of stoppers for the wine and spirits trades that provides the main revenue that sustains cork forests in Portugal, Spain and other countries around the Mediterranean.
Cork is one of nature’s mysteries: a unique material that renews itself every nine years from the bark of a special oak tree.
Cork oaks are not harvested for their bark until they are about 25 years old.
After this harvesting takes place every nine years (minimum legal period).
02.
Cork in use today
The first harvest suitable for making bottle stoppers is not obtained until the third stripping i.e. when the tree is at least 40 years old. An average cork oak will live for 160 to 180 years and produce 15 stripping during its productive life.
Perhaps because cork has been used for so many years, we forget what makes this natural product superior to any other material as an effective closure for a bottle of wine. Each cubic centimetre of cork contains approximately 40 million cells containing microscopic amounts of air composed of nitrogen and oxygen.
This unique structure allows a cork to be compressed on a bottling line and then instantly revert to 85% of its original size to form an airtight seal. No man-made material has this capability.
03.
Environmental issues
The Portuguese cork producer Amorim has published a report comparing the environmental impacts and energy used to produce aluminium, plastic and cork materials and the carbon emissions involved.
Cork oak forests and the natural products derived from them are a major carbon sink and have an important role in sustainable development. The crucial role of cork in carbon dioxide retention, preserving biodiversity and combating desertification was highlighted.
In comparison, the mining and extraction of non-renewable resources such as petrochemicals to make plastics and bauxite (used to produce aluminium) have very significant and potentially negative impacts on ecosystems.
04.
Unique characteristics
Cork is impermeable to liquids and gases and has a low conductivity of heat, sound and vibration making it an ideal insulation material and shock absorber.
The unique cellular structure of cork means that more than 50% of its volume is air, so it is also very light in weight and can float.
Another unique characteristic of cork is that when it is compressed, it does not expand in another direction which is why a natural cork is easier to remove from a bottle and why it is less likely to leak than plastic materials.
Cork is 100% recyclable and requires very low energy consumption since a significant part of the energy required for production is satisfied using biomass.

Failed Renders and painted properties
With so many failed render and paints out there, you need to feel reassured that the product you are using meets all the required goals. When products are not applied in the correct format it can lead to a failed substrate finish. Corticyte will only be installed by an approved applicator, ensuring you get the results you require with a 15-year assurance guarantee.
CORTICYTE GETS RESULTS!
When using Corticyte as the primary render and decorative coating on external walls, failed and blown renders or peeling paint becomes a thing of the past. With Corticyte, you can relax, safe in the knowledge that your property won’t require painting for at least 15 years and the render aspect will last a lot longer.
ROOF PROBLEMS
Whether you have a tiled, metal, cement fibre or asbestos roof, over time, roof substrates may degrade, crack, and become subjected to water leaks from external environmental conditions. Replacing a roof can be a painstaking task which not only creates down time for the building and its occupants, but it can become a very expensive task. Where roofs are in generally good condition but have weathered and require some additional lifespan, Corticyte can help to extend their life for up to 15-20 years.
CORTICYTE ROOF SOLUTIONS
Corticyte roof coating solutions are durable, waterproof, flexible and breathable to add significant protection to degrading or failing roofs. Provided the roof isn’t beyond the state of repair, Corticyte coatings can be spray-applied onto clean surfaces at 2-3mm in thickness to bridge cracks and provide a seamless, monolithic, and thermal layer. As with most waterproof coatings, Corticyte relies on dry conditions with low wind speeds to ensure a strong adhesion and that overspray doesn’t reach surrounding assets.

FAQs
What is Corticyte made from?
Corticyte is a naturally sourced product from the bark of cork oak trees. The bark is shredded into fine particles and mixed with water, pigments, and resins to make an eco-friendly alternative to traditional cementitious renders and coatings. No trees are harmed during the harvesting process and the bar regrows over a 9-year period before the tree can be considered for re-harvesting.
Is Corticyte expensive?
The cost of Corticyte is comparable to many traditional render and waterproof coating systems. The benefits of using Corticyte lie within its longevity, the ability for the colour pigment to be maintained for long durations and the breathable, waterproofing, and sustainable nature of the system. The price per metre depends on volume and usually sits between £30-£50 per square metre.
Who installs Corticyte?
We only allow Corticyte to be installed by approved applicators who have attended and passed our training course. Due to the product science, application methods, asset protection requirements and overall technique of application, ThermoCoat-approved applicators have the knowledge and experience to deliver compliant projects.
What’s the expected lifespan?
Most Corticyte installations will attract a 15-year manufacturer’s warranty but are expected to last more than this period. In some circumstances, Corticyte projects will stand the test of time to last for more than 25 years! Provided the installation has been completed by a ThermoCoat-approved applicator, you can expect to receive a product warranty upon project completion.
How long does an installation take?
Depending on the experience of the approved applicator and the access requirements for the property, most residential installations take 3-5 days. In larger commercial environments, particularly factory roof installations, installation can take longer. In general, an applicator should be able to apply up to 40m2 of the first coat in a single day, but this depends on weather and wind speeds.
Can Corticyte be used internally?
Yes!, Corticyte is frequently used as an architectural coating to give an industrial feel to interior walls. Due to the grain within the cork, it is not possible to achieve a smooth finish like traditional plasters which will need consideration before choosing the solution. When used internally, Corticyte will slow heat loss, enable moisture to escape and stop driving damp, mould, and condensation from forming.
